Murchison Falls National Park | Bwindi Primate Safaris

Welcome to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and most dramatic wildlife reserve. Located in northwestern Uganda, this park is where the mighty Nile River explodes through a narrow seven-meter gorge and plunges 43 meters downward. No other park in Uganda offers such a combination of powerful waterfalls, boat cruises, and classic savanna wildlife.

Bwindi Primate Safaris combines gorilla trekking in Bwindi with game drives and boat cruises in Murchison Falls. The contrast is extraordinary. One day you are hiking through misty mountain forest. The next day you are watching elephants drink from the Nile while hippos grunt nearby. This variety makes Murchison Falls National Park a must-visit destination for any Uganda safari.

Why Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s Most Dramatic Park

Murchison Falls National Park covers nearly 4,000 square kilometers, making it Uganda’s largest national park. The park is bisected by the Nile River, which flows from east to west through the center. The northern bank is open savanna, home to lions, giraffes, elephants, and buffalo. The southern bank is denser forest, home to chimpanzees and other primates. This diversity of habitats supports an incredible range of wildlife.

The centerpiece of Murchison Falls National Park is the waterfall itself. The Nile, which has been wide and lazy for hundreds of kilometers, suddenly narrows to just seven meters before exploding through the gorge. The spray rises high into the air. The roar can be heard from kilometers away. Standing at the top of the falls, feeling the mist on your face and watching the water disappear into the abyss, is a humbling experience.

The Boat Cruise to the Bottom of the Falls

The most popular activity in Murchison Falls National Park is the boat cruise from Paraa to the base of the falls. The cruise takes approximately two hours each way. You board a large motorboat at the Paraa jetty and travel upstream along the Nile. Within minutes, you see hippos. Dozens of them. They yawn, snort, and splash as the boat passes. Nile crocodiles lie motionless on the riverbanks, their eyes just above the water.

Elephants come to the water’s edge to drink. Buffalo stand in the shallows, cooling themselves. Giraffes peer through the trees on the riverbanks. The bird life is extraordinary. African fish eagles perch on dead trees, scanning for fish. Kingfishers dive from overhanging branches. Herons and storks wade in the shallows. And then you hear it. A distant roar that grows louder as you approach. The waterfall.

The boat stops a safe distance from the base of Murchison Falls National Park‘s main attraction. The water explodes in front of you. Rainbows form in the spray. The power is overwhelming. Your boat captain holds the position for several minutes, allowing you to take photos and simply absorb the moment. Then you turn and drift back downstream, the roar fading behind you.

Nature walks are also available near the falls for those who want to experience the rainforest section of the park.

Game Drives in Murchison Falls National Park

The Northern Bank

The northern bank of Murchison Falls National Park is classic African savanna. Open grasslands stretch to the horizon, dotted with acacia trees and palm stands. This is where you find the big game. Lions are the main attraction. The park has a healthy lion population, and sightings are common, especially in the early morning. The lions here are known for climbing trees, similar to the lions in Ishasha.

Giraffes are everywhere on the northern bank. Rothschild’s giraffes, one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies, are easily identified by their white lower legs and five horns instead of two. Elephants move in small family groups. Buffalo gather in large herds. Jackson’s hartebeest and Uganda kob are common antelope species. If you are lucky, you might see a leopard resting in a tree or a hyena returning to its den.

The Delta Cruise

Where the Nile enters Lake Albert, Murchison Falls National Park creates a vast delta of papyrus swamps and shallow channels. A boat cruise through the delta offers a completely different experience from the falls cruise. Here, you search for the shoebill stork, one of the most sought-after birds in Africa. The shoebill stands over four feet tall with a massive shoe-shaped bill. It moves slowly and silently through the papyrus, hunting lungfish and frogs.

The delta is also home to large herds of elephants and buffalo. Hippos are everywhere. The bird life is spectacular, with over 450 species recorded in Murchison Falls National Park. The delta cruise is best done in the late afternoon when the light is golden and the shoebills are most active.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest

Inside Murchison Falls National Park, on the southern bank of the Nile, lies the Budongo Forest. This forest is home to an estimated 800 chimpanzees, one of the largest populations in Uganda. Chimpanzee trekking is available here, offering a different experience from Kibale National Park. The forest is less crowded, and the treks feel more remote.

Permits for Budongo are limited each day. The trekking can be challenging due to the dense forest and hilly terrain. But the reward is watching chimpanzees in their natural habitat, feeding, grooming, and communicating with their complex calls. Combine chimpanzee trekking in Budongo with gorilla trekking in Bwindi for the ultimate primate safari.

Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls National Park

The best time to visit Murchison Falls National Park is during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. During these months, the roads are in good condition, and wildlife gathers around the remaining water sources, making game viewing easier. The boat cruises run daily regardless of season, but water levels are lower in the dry season, bringing you closer to the hippos and crocodiles.

The wet season from March to May and October to November has advantages too. The park is greener and more beautiful. Bird watching is at its best because migratory birds are present. Lodges offer lower rates. However, some roads become muddy and difficult to navigate. Murchison Falls National Park is large, and driving between sectors can take hours. Bwindi Primate Safaris uses 4×4 vehicles that handle wet conditions well, but drive times may be longer.
