Welcome to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s smallest but most dramatic national park. Located in the southwestern corner of Uganda, this park protects the Ugandan side of the Virunga Mountains. Three extinct volcanoes rise from the forest: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. The park is home to golden monkeys, one habituated gorilla family, and incredible hiking opportunities.
Bwindi Primate Safaris offers golden monkey trekking, volcano hiking, and gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The park is much quieter than Bwindi, with fewer visitors. This means more time with the wildlife and a more intimate experience. For travelers who want to see both gorillas and golden monkeys, Mgahinga is the best choice.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park covers only 33 square kilometers, making it the smallest national park in Uganda. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in scenery. The three volcanoes dominate the skyline. Their slopes are covered in bamboo forest, which transitions into montane forest and finally alpine vegetation near the summits. The views from the park are spectacular, looking out over the Virunga range into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
What makes Mgahinga Gorilla National Park special is the variety of activities in a small area. You can trek golden monkeys in the morning, hike a volcano in the afternoon, and do a Batwa cultural experience in the evening. All without long drives between activities. The park is also much quieter than Bwindi, with only a fraction of the visitors. You will often have the trails to yourself.
The most popular activity in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is golden monkey trekking. Golden monkeys are a subspecies of the blue monkey, distinguished by their bright golden-orange fur. They are smaller and more active than gorillas, constantly moving through the bamboo forest. Watching them is like watching acrobats. They leap from bamboo stalk to bamboo stalk, landing on branches that bend nearly to the ground before springing back up.
Golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park takes two to three hours. You hike through the bamboo forest with a ranger and trackers. When you find the golden monkey troop, you spend one hour watching them feed, play, and groom each other. The monkeys are habituated to human presence, so they ignore you and go about their lives. The trekking is easier than gorilla trekking because the monkeys live in the bamboo zone, which is lower on the volcano.
Permits for golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are available each day. Book your golden monkey trekking experience with Bwindi Primate Safaris to secure your permit in advance.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is home to one habituated gorilla family: the Nyakagezi family. This family has been trekked for many years and is very comfortable with human presence. The gorillas in Mgahinga behave differently than those in Bwindi because the habitat is different. The bamboo forest is more open, so the gorillas are easier to see and photograph. The trekking is also less strenuous because the gorillas live on the lower slopes of the volcano.
However, the Nyakagezi family is known to cross into Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo occasionally. When this happens, trekking is not possible until they return. For this reason, most travelers choose Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for guaranteed gorilla trekking. But if you have flexibility in your schedule, trekking in Mgahinga offers a unique experience with fewer crowds and more open forest.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers three volcano hikes, each with different difficulty levels and rewards.
Mount Sabyinyo is the oldest of the three volcanoes. Its name means “old man’s teeth” in the local language, referring to the jagged summit. The hike to the summit takes six to eight hours round trip. It is steep and challenging, with sections where you climb using ropes and ladders. The reward is standing at the intersection of three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The views in all directions are breathtaking.
Mount Gahinga is the smallest of the three volcanoes. Its name means “small pile of stones.” The hike to the summit takes four to five hours round trip. The trail passes through beautiful bamboo forest, then montane forest, and finally alpine vegetation. Near the summit, you find a crater swamp and stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes. This hike is suitable for moderately fit hikers.
Mount Muhabura is the highest of the three volcanoes at 4,127 meters. Its name means “the guide” because its shape is visible from far away. The hike to the summit takes eight to ten hours round trip. It is very steep and challenging, suitable only for experienced hikers. The reward is a crater lake at the summit and views of all the Virunga volcanoes.
Combine volcano hiking with gorilla trekking for an adventurous Uganda safari.
The Batwa people lived in the forests of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for thousands of years before the park was established. They were hunter-gatherers who knew every tree, every plant, and every animal. When the park was created, the Batwa were relocated to the edge of the forest. They lost their home and their way of life. Today, the Batwa share their culture with visitors through a community experience.
The Batwa cultural experience in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park begins with a walk to the Garama Cave. The Batwa used this cave as a shelter and meeting place. Inside the cave, Batwa elders demonstrate how they made fire without matches, how they hunted small game, and how they used forest plants for medicine. The Batwa men and women sing and dance, their voices echoing off the cave walls. It is a moving and educational experience.
After the cave, you visit a Batwa village where families demonstrate traditional crafts, cooking, and daily life. You can buy crafts directly from the artisans, with the money going to the community. Learn more about the Batwa cultural experience and how your visit supports the Batwa community.
The best time to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. During these months, the trails are less muddy and the hiking is easier. The views from the volcanoes are clearer. Golden monkey trekking is more comfortable.
The wet season from March to May and October to November has advantages too. The forest is greener and the flowers are blooming. The bird watching is excellent. The volcanoes are often shrouded in mist, creating dramatic photos. Lodges offer lower rates. However, the trails become very muddy and slippery. Volcano hiking is not recommended during heavy rain.
