Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is home to one habituated gorilla family: the Nyakagezi family. This family has been trekked for many years and is very comfortable with human presence. The gorillas in Mgahinga behave differently than those in Bwindi because the habitat is different. The bamboo forest is more open, so the gorillas are easier to see and photograph. The trekking is also less strenuous because the gorillas live on the lower slopes of the volcano.

Mount Sabyinyo is the oldest of the three volcanoes. Its name means “old man’s teeth” in the local language, referring to the jagged summit. The hike to the summit takes six to eight hours round trip. It is steep and challenging, with sections where you climb using ropes and ladders. The reward is standing at the intersection of three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The views in all directions are breathtaking.
Mount Gahinga is the smallest of the three volcanoes. Its name means “small pile of stones.” The hike to the summit takes four to five hours round trip. The trail passes through beautiful bamboo forest, then montane forest, and finally alpine vegetation. Near the summit, you find a crater swamp and stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes. This hike is suitable for moderately fit hikers.
Mount Muhabura is the highest of the three volcanoes at 4,127 meters. Its name means “the guide” because its shape is visible from far away. The hike to the summit takes eight to ten hours round trip. It is very steep and challenging, suitable only for experienced hikers. The reward is a crater lake at the summit and views of all the Virunga volcanoes.

The Batwa people lived in the forests of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for thousands of years before the park was established. They were hunter-gatherers who knew every tree, every plant, and every animal. When the park was created, the Batwa were relocated to the edge of the forest. They lost their home and their way of life. Today, the Batwa share their culture with visitors through a community experience.
The Batwa cultural experience in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park begins with a walk to the Garama Cave. The Batwa used this cave as a shelter and meeting place. Inside the cave, Batwa elders demonstrate how they made fire without matches, how they hunted small game, and how they used forest plants for medicine. The Batwa men and women sing and dance, their voices echoing off the cave walls. It is a moving and educational experience.

The best time to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. During these months, the trails are less muddy and the hiking is easier. The views from the volcanoes are clearer. Golden monkey trekking is more comfortable.
The wet season from March to May and October to November has advantages too. The forest is greener and the flowers are blooming. The bird watching is excellent. The volcanoes are often shrouded in mist, creating dramatic photos. Lodges offer lower rates. However, the trails become very muddy and slippery. Volcano hiking is not recommended during heavy rain.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, approximately a one-hour drive from Kisoro town. The park is eight to ten hours from Kampala by road. Most travelers fly into Kigali, Rwanda, and drive to Mgahinga. The drive from Kigali takes four to five hours on good roads. This is the most efficient way to reach the park.
