Detailed Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may visit the Entebbe Botanical Gardens or relax after your flight. The botanical gardens are home to vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and over 200 bird species. In the evening, you will meet your guide and fellow travelers for a briefing and welcome dinner. Overnight at a hotel in Entebbe.
Day 2: Fly to Bwindi – Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, you will take a domestic flight from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip. The flight offers spectacular views of Lake Victoria, the Rwenzori Mountains, and the Virunga volcanoes. Upon landing, you will drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
You will have a briefing at the park headquarters before beginning your gorilla trek. The briefing covers gorilla etiquette, safety rules, and what to expect during your trek. You will then be assigned to a gorilla family based on your fitness level and preferences.
The trek can take 2 to 7 hours depending on where the gorillas are located. The terrain is steep and can be muddy, so good physical fitness is recommended. Porters are available for hire at 20 dollars to carry your daypack and assist with difficult sections. Once you find the gorillas, you will spend one hour observing these incredible animals. After the trek, you will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking or Batwa Experience
Today you have the option to do a second gorilla trek (additional permit required) or visit the Batwa pygmies for a cultural experience. The Batwa were the original forest dwellers of Bwindi, living in harmony with the forest for over 60,000 years until they were displaced when the park was established. The Batwa experience includes a forest walk, traditional dancing, and demonstrations of hunting techniques and medicinal plant knowledge.
If you choose to do a second gorilla trek, you will be assigned to a different gorilla family, giving you the opportunity to observe different behaviors and dynamics. The second trek is often less strenuous as you will be more familiar with the terrain. Overnight at your lodge in Bwindi.
Day 4: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast, you will drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a journey of approximately 4 hours through beautiful countryside. The drive passes through the Ishasha sector, which is famous for its tree climbing lions. These lions are often seen lounging in the branches of fig trees during the heat of the day.
You will have an afternoon game drive in the park, searching for elephants, lions, buffalo, and other wildlife. Queen Elizabeth is known for its high biodiversity, with over 95 mammal species and 600 bird species recorded. Overnight at a lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Day 5: Game Drive and Kazinga Boat Cruise
After an early morning game drive, you will return to the lodge for breakfast. The early morning hours are the best time to see predators returning from their night hunts. Later in the morning, you will take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake Edward and Lake George.
The Kazinga Channel has the highest concentration of hippos in Africa, with literally hundreds visible from the boat. You will also see crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, and numerous bird species including African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and egrets. The boat cruise is a highlight of any visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. In the afternoon, you will have another game drive or relax at the lodge. Overnight in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Day 6: Transfer to Entebbe – Departure
After breakfast, you will drive back to Entebbe, with a stop at the Equator for photos. You will have lunch in Mbarara, a bustling town known for its delicious Ankole long horned cattle beef. You will continue to Entebbe and be dropped off at Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your Gorillas wildlife group joining.
